Meet the Music Directors
Dr. Matthew Brunner assumed his duties as co-director of music at Supplee in 2009. He came to the Philadelphia area after being hired as Assistant Professor of Music in the Department of Instrumental Studies, Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University in 2008. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Indiana University, a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting with minor area studies in trumpet and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree (cum laude) from Ohio University. Matt has performed in church for many years on trumpet and as a part of various choirs, bell choirs, and Praise Bands. He grew up in St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, OH and participated in music ministry during his graduate degrees at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, IN and Richland United Methodist in Athens, OH.
After receiving his Bachelors degree, Matt served as a band director in the Carrollton School District in Carrollton, Ohio. He also participated in area concert bands, orchestra, jazz, rock, and funk bands. Brunner became one of the staff arrangers for the Ohio University Marching 110. He is credited with over one hundred marching band arrangements for university and high school marching bands across the country. Matt is also published in the Teaching Music through Performance in Band book series, Teaching Music through Performance in Beginning Band book series, and The National Band Association Journal. He is active as an adjudicator and clinician. In 2007, he was one of the winners of the National Band Association's International Conducting Symposium in Sherborne, England.
Matt also serves as the Eastern Division Chair and Pennsylvania State Representative for the National Band Association. His other professional affiliations include College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, Pennsylvania Music Education Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
Janice Brunner is a native of Tiffin, OH. She grew up in the First Presbyterian Church where her parents served as organists and choir directors. She spent her childhood years performing in the choirs, handbell choirs, and liturgical dance.
Janice graduated from Ohio University cum laude in 1998 with her Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. From 1998-2000, she was the high school choral director at Northwest High School in Canal Fulton, OH. In addition to her responsibilities directing all high school choirs and show choir, she was the Director of the High School Musicals. In 2000 Janice accepted a position in the school district her husband was teaching. She served for 2 years in the Carrollton School District as the Jr. High Choral Director. In 2002 Janice and Matt moved to Athens, OH so Matt could work on his Masters Degree. While there, Janice taught elementary music for 3 years in the Logan Hocking School District. While there, Janice received the Teacher of the Year Award.
In 2005 Janice took some time off of teaching to raise children, but continued to conduct various Church choirs in Ohio and Indiana. In 2008 Janice and Matt moved to Philadelphia. They accepted the position of Directors of Music at Supplee in 2009 and direct the Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, they oversee the Praise Band, and Janice co-directs the Children’s Choir. Janice and Matt live in Glenside Pa and have two boys, Kyler and Kaden.
