Welcome

To all who mourn and need comfort; to all who are tired and need rest; to all who are friendless and want friendship; to all who search after sheltering love; to all who pray, and to all who do not, but ought to; to all who sin and need the Savior; to whoever will come, this church says “Welcome” in the name of Jesus Christ.

~The Organ~

by Randy Morrison

The Organ began as a Wicks Organ Company “American Classic” 10 rank (sets of pipes) instrument with a two manual and pedal drawknob console in 1983. It was through a large initial gift that a fund was established and the organ purchased at that time. It was installed in what is now the Chapel, and from the outset, it was hoped that the organ could be expanded as funds permitted.

In 1987, the building of the new Sanctuary included moving the organ to its present location, with the addition of two ranks of pipes, and re-installation in the new chambers and chancel center. An Oboe was added to the Swell division, and a Rohrflöte to the Great. In 1993, another initial gift and matching gifts by others made possible the addition of another rank – the 4’ independent Octave in the Great division. This was one of the original additions suggested by Wicks, and it filled out the Principal Chorus.

In 2001, another rank – a 16’ Pedal Principal of 44 notes was installed, to augment the Pedal division, and provide depth to the ensemble. At that time, it was realized that the two manual console had very little room left for additional stop controls. In fact, one of the pedal stop knobs had to be put at the bottom of the Swell section. In early 2002, a project began to determine the options for a larger console, or expanding the original.

It turned out that Wicks had replaced a console in St. Louis, MO, and had both the console and switching system available. The console had three manuals (adding a Choir and Gallery Division). It appeared to have enough space for our future additions, and was in good condition. A trip was made to the Wicks factory in Highland, IL, near St. Louis to pick it up. A few weeks of wiring and planning work and some cleanup made it ready to be put into service. Because the switching system was similar to ours, connecting the new console was relatively easy. The console was put in service the week after Easter 2002. It was purchased with a gift from the family of Elsie and Val Florence, charter members of the church.

A trade of the original two-manual console for three ranks of pipes was worked out. Planning for the Choir division, using those new pipes and others began; a twelve rank (eleven stop) addition was coming together. The organ will reach almost three times its original size by early 2007.

Additions completed in late 2004 saw the 16/8/4 Bombarde added in the Great and Pedal divisions, and two additional stops (Mixture II (1 1/3') and Pommer 4’) to the pedal division. The next improvement was the installation of a larger blower and static reservoir to increase the wind supply to the pipes, completed in January 2005.

The Choir Division is now installed in the chamber above the Swell Division as of late September 2007. Just the Tuba and Clarinet are still to be added, as well as the bottom octave of the 8' Geigen Principal, and some re-arrangement and installation of stop controls. Many thanks to all who helped out with the division, from parts suppliers, pipes, and advice, and many friends have been made. Diane Meredith Belcher presented a workshop on Registration and Service Playing on September 29, 2007 and showcased the instrument.

Diane made some suggestions while at the church for the Workshop. The first was that 16’ Manual tone would be interesting. The 16’ register of the Swell Trumpet and Bourdon are now available for use on the Swell. They were completed by Thanksgiving 2007.

Currently, there are 1751 pipes in the organ. The Choir Tuba and Clarinet are still to be added (soon) and will add 122 pipes to the organ for a current total of 1973 pipes. Still to be added, later, are approximately 350 pipes in the Gallery division.

Early in 2008, a Vox Humana Stop at 8' pitch was acquired, and will be installed as soon as a wind chest for it is built. Also, The Pedal Gedeckt Pommer 4' was temporarily removed, due to ciphers, and is being converted from Electro-pneumatic to Electro-mechanical action, and has been reinstalled. A Cornopean (Trumpet) for the Gallery Division has been acquired and will be installed as part of that division.

The Gallery Division will be added in 2008.

All of the additions made to date have been funded by special contributions, as well as by use of Music fund monies given to the church by Mrs. Dorris Lindsley.
